Datolite Menard Mine, Chlorastrolite (Greenstone) from old collection from Isle Royale Cuff Bracelet DMMG-B1
Datolite is a borosilicate mineral (hardness: 5-5.5). It is associated with native copper deposits in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. The characteristic ‘cauliflower’ shaped nodules range from 1-12 inches. The rarest colors are yellow, orange, green and red. White and pink are more common. At times specks of copper or silver appear with the datolite. This rare mineral is found in old waste rock piles and in Lake Superior.
Chlorastrolite is the “official state gem” of Michigan. It is a variety of the mineral pumpellyite and is found primarily as a small, green, rounded beach pebble, showing a turtleback pattern. Greenstones can still be found on Isle Royale and on some of the mine waste piles of the Copper Country, although it is a rare mineral.
